Ice Climbing.............................. In London !
I had an hours session booked for me at Vertical Chill at Convent
Garden.
I tryed to do some outdoor iceclimbing a couple of years ago in Canada but
high winds and tempertures of -60c with the windchill saw it canceled.
I arrived at vertical chill and got suited up with the equipment
supplied.
The wall is contained in a huge freezer which covers 2 floors with viewing
windows. The temprature is about -5 to keep the ice as ice.
Having never done ice climbing before it was a bit strange at first but got
to grips with it, Some of the pointers given to me are very similar to
windsurfing don't grip the axes too tighly and when using the axes keep
your bum in and shoulders back.
I was all roped up for safety so no chance of falling off the ice and to
aid coming down too just had to take the axes out the ice and walk down
backwards so a bit of absailing too.
Had a great day even if it ment going to london, tourists everywhere think
I was the only english person there ...........even the climbing instructor
was foreign
Also very tiring indeed can really feel it in the wrists and legs. Somthing
I would like to do again maybe next year I may go up to Castleton as they
have a 16m ice wall there.
